Parents' Handbook 2019 – 2020 39 reasons including, but not limited to, one or more acts of misconduct set out above. TFS reserves the right to expel a student when the continued attendance of that student would not be in the best interests of that student or the school. TFS also reserves the right to expel a student when their behaviour seriously jeopardizes the school's ability to guarantee the dignity and safety of its students, interferes with learning, or involves conduct which is injurious to the school's moral tone or to the physical or mental well-being of others. In these circumstances, the school will make reasonable efforts to assist the student's family in securing suitable, alternative education arrangements. Discipline Process In determining whether an offence/situation of non- compliance has been committed and what sanction should be applied, TFS will employ procedures that: - are in proportion to the severity of the alleged offence; - ensure that a student and the student's parents and caregivers are aware of the complaint against the student; - take into account the previous history of the student and all other relevant factors; - ensure that a student has the opportunity to present fully and fairly their version of events and an explanation, and to have these taken into account by the decision-maker; and, - ensure that the decisions will be made in a fair and impartial way. If it is felt that a major violation of the TFS Code of Conduct has taken place (i.e., a suspendable offence), the Principal or Vice-Principal will review the findings with the Deputy Head, Citizenship and Community Engagement. The Principal or Vice-Principal will contact the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the student to discuss how the school will deal with the incident of non- compliance to the Code of Conduct. In the case of suspensions, parents/caregivers may request a review of the decision in writing to the Head of School within 10 school days of the decision. All assigned suspensions will be served and entered into the student's record. In some cases, the record of suspension may be removed following an appeal, or at a future date after discussions and a review with members of the school's branch leadership team and the Deputy Head, Citizenship and Community Engagement, providing the student does not further violate the TFS Code of Conduct. Building Partnerships Relationships that engage the whole school community and its parents promote a positive school environment and support the progressive discipline continuum. Protocols between TFS and community agencies are effective ways to establish linkages, and to formalize the relationship between them. These protocols facilitate the delivery of prevention and response programs, the use of referral processes, and the provision of services and support for students and their parents and families. To facilitate the building of partnerships, TFS will maintain an up-to-date contact list of community agencies or organizations that have the professional expertise to support TFS students and their parents and families. Communication Strategy For a progressive discipline approach to be effective, it is important that all members of the school community, including teachers, students and parents understand and support the progressive discipline approach. TFS will actively communicate policies and procedures to all students, parents, staff members and Board members. 7) REVISIONS TO THE TFS CODE OF CONDUCT The TFS Code of Conduct will be reviewed on a regular basis. TFS will continue to solicit input from the TFS community in the review process. The full current Code of Conduct can be found in your branch site under Resources.
