Parents' Handbook 2019 – 2020 43 ASSESSMENT POLICY The establishment of a written assessment, evaluation and reporting policy buttresses and enhances the school's academic excellence. As a statement of purpose, this policy serves to underpin a well-planned continuum of practice which is consistent, coherent and developmentally appropriate across the school. This policy is founded upon the TFS mission and draws upon its tradition. The policy complies with curricular requirements for Ontario, France and the International Baccalaureate Programs and reflects leading research on best practice in this domain. In turn, this policy seeks to aid communication about student achievement between teachers, students and parents. Ultimately, it facilitates students' progress in their learning. This policy document includes sections on the rationale and process for determining marks, how missed/late work is handled, and the TFS evaluation scale. TUTORING POLICY AND PROGRAM There is a range of supports available at TFS to better equip all students with the tools they need for academic success. These often include extra help from teachers, homework skills club, math clinics, virtual tutorials, peer mentoring and small group sessions for study strategies. There are no fees for any of these supports. At times, individualized tutoring is recommended to be in the best interest of the student. The Branch Principal and Learning Forum will coordinate tutoring in subject content, academic coaching or reading skills. Tutoring for a fee must be arranged through the Learning Forum within the following guidelines: 1) HIRING TUTORS Prior to tutoring TFS students on campus, all tutors must submit a resumé, a recent police check and complete a TFS tutoring form. An interview with the Executive Director of the Learning Forum will include a review of qualifications and school procedures as outlined in the Manual for Substitute Teachers. All tutoring will take place on campus in a supervised area such as the Learning Forum. Tutors may be TFS faculty, although they may not tutor any student whom they are currently teaching or conflict with times when they are teaching, offering extra help to their students or supporting admissions. Tutors will not be given keys or cards to the school and should sign in at the attendance desk before tutoring. Tutoring arranged through the school takes place at the school only. The school is not responsible for the actions of tutors who meet with students off-campus. 2) ARRANGING FOR A TUTOR Requests for tutoring at TFS may come from a student, teacher, or parent, or the student's homeroom or Learning Resource teacher. This request will be reviewed by the SBST team to ensure tutoring is the best option. The following questions will be considered: • What kind of help is already in place at and beyond school? • Is the student needing content or academic skills support? • Have other strategies already been tried through the Learning Forum and with teachers? • Is the parent aware that a tutoring fee of $75 per hour session will be billed to the student's TFS account? 3) TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES • The tutor will arrange times with parents to meet the student and note this on the tutoring form. This location will be confirmed with Dianne Matys at the Senior School and Branch Administrators at other branches.
