Grade 7 Bethany Leadership Retreat IN NOVEMBER, 15 GRADE 7 STUDENTS and their supervisors participated in a five-day leadership camp about reconciliation with Canada's First Nations and the environment, reflecting on social change via civic engagement, and understanding their role in creating social change. They engaged with the elders of the Curve Lake First Nation Community to learn about the history and culture of the lands and visited the Canadian Canoe Museum and a local permaculture farm. It was a transformational journey for everyone. Students excel in Défi-Franco competitions AT THE WEST CAMPUS, students compete in Défi-Franco, with teachers awarding points to students who consistently speak French in and outside of the classroom. The winners last fall walked to Carmen Corbasson Community Centre where they enjoyed delicious crêpes and had a blast at a celebratory dance. FRENCH EXCHANGE THIS FALL, Mme Sénéchal, a Grade 3 teacher from Arcachon in France, visited Mme Shahireh Rehman and our Grade 3D class to set up a letter exchange with her class in France. Our students are excited to practise their writing skills and meet new friends. MANDARIN IN ACTION DURING A UNIT OF STUDY FOCUSED ON COMMUNITY PLANNING, the LII Mandarin students applied new skills in an activity where they created the map of an imaginary community. They then got to explore Toronto's Chinatown, practising their Mandarin and reflecting on how the roads and facilities compared to their imaginary communities. Welcome to Greece! DURING FALL 2018'S GREEK WEEK, La p'tite école and Junior School students were transported to Greece, a country rich in history, customs, culture and magical landscapes. The students learned cultural and historical facts about Greece, its role in sporting events such as the Olympic Games, the influence of Greek on both English and French, and the impact of Greek philosophers. They also sampled culinary specialties such as loukoumades and tyropitas. The atmosphere at both schools was festive, as they were decorated in Greece's colours, as well as with Greek artifacts. At the end of the week, a student's grandfather spoke about Greece to our JK students and we ended the day with a traditional Greek dance.
