2019 ALUMNI OF DISTINCTION AWARDS Toronto-based filmmaker Rebeccah Love is considered one of Canada's important young voices, and her work, which has screened at film festivals across the country, is part of a movement that some film critics have dubbed "The Toronto New Wave." For Ms. Love, filmmaking is an act of community building, and her thoughtful films celebrate people and communities coming together. Her contributions to contemporary Canadian film are considered unique and sensitive. She belongs to a growing movement of millennial filmmakers who are reshaping the Canadian film landscape and she has paved the way for other young female directors. Ms. Love is a graduate of Ryerson University (BFA, Film) and of the University of Guelph (MFA, Creative Writing). Today she enjoys using her fluency in both of Canada's official languages in her role as a filmmaker. Ms. Love truly is an individual who reflects and a citizen who acts. "We need to be looking out for each other, to build community where we can. Empathy has never been more important, but no matter one's circumstances, it is essential to stay engaged." REBECCAH LOVE '08 Recipient of Le prix de distinction des jeunes diplômés Filmmaker For the love of film Julia Bentley is currently Canada's High Commissioner to Malaysia. She joined the Canadian foreign service in 1991 and has also served at Canadian missions in China, Taiwan and India. Her early exposure to language learning at TFS led to her fluency in five languages, which has served her well. Her acquisition of the Chinese language in particular sparked a lifelong interest in Asia, where she spent over 20 years. With her multilingualism, her open, curious mind, and degrees from Princeton University and the University of Toronto, as well as a diploma from Nanjing University, Julia is the consummate diplomat, at ease in both bilateral and multinational contexts. Widely respected for her distinguished service as a diplomat, representing Canada at home and abroad, Julia personifies our school's cherished values: integrity, discernment, respect and engagement. "What I find most satisfying in my current role is the privilege of representing Canada abroad and being able to connect people in Canada and Malaysia in ways which they find professionally rewarding."
