Parents' Handbook 2020– 2021 17 LEARNING THROUGH ACADEMIC AMBITION The TFS school motto, individuals who reflect, citizens who act, emphasizes the responsibility of individuals to engage in reflection and lifelong learning so that they can develop the discernment needed in order to become active citizens who can make a positive impact in the world. More specifically, our understanding of effective learning is based on the concept of academic ambition, which views learning as an ongoing journey of wonder and fascination, and the learner as an ethical and intellectually curious traveller in search of meaning. Learning based on the spirit of academic ambition is characterized by the following attitudes and practices: - Pursuing knowledge and understanding through deep inquiry - Reflecting constantly on learning so that steps for growth can be established, reviewed and updated - Embracing academic challenge through a model of trial and error - Facing difficulty with integrity, resilience and self-belief - Communicating effectively in a variety of contexts - Collaborating closely with others in the construction of meaning - Developing critical thinking in order to better understand the complexity of the world and make wise choices - Questioning respectfully the status quo as a result of a deep understanding of causes and consequences in the local and global contexts - Using acquired knowledge, skills and dispositions to contribute to the betterment of humankind - Continually striving for excellence Teaching and Learning year for store credit or money back. Supplemental fees for digital and other print materials are billed directly to your student account. TFS courses and associated booklists can be found on the Senior School branch site (sr.tfs.ca) below the Senior School Calendar section, and on Batner Bookstore's website. USED UNIFORM SALES The TFS Parents' Association holds Used Uniform Sales throughout the school year. Some parents buy the majority of their child's uniform pieces from the sale, while others use the sales to replace lost or outgrown items. TFS families, whose children have outgrown uniform items, donate gently used clothing to the Used Uniform Sale by dropping them off at their branch office in a bag labeled "Used Uniform". Items are in excellent condition and stock is replenished on a regular basis from donations throughout the year. On average, the prices at the sale are at least half of the retail price. Payment is very easy, as we simply charge your child's TFS account! Please check the PA's website (pa.tfs.ca) for used uniform sale dates. Also, you will find signage around the school prior to a sale. If you have any questions or comments, please contact the Used Uniform Co-Chairs by email at pa.useduniform@tfs.ca.
