46 Parents' Handbook 2020– 2021 - When food is brought to the school to be shared, e.g. for concerts or special events, please ensure all food is nut-free and labelled as such. Chartwells, our food service provider on the Toronto campus, prohibits the use of nuts and/or nut-derivative products, including peanuts, walnuts, cashews, almonds and all other tree nuts within the TFS environment. Chartwells purchases all food products from authorized suppliers in accordance with the TFS Anaphylaxis Policy. All food labels are checked for nuts upon delivery to TFS. Any products containing nuts are returned to the supplier or disposed of immediately. However, neither Chartwells nor TFS can guarantee a completely allergen-free environment. While we do have a well-communicated policy in place for all students, staff, parents and guests that prohibits nut/ nut products from being brought onto both of our campuses, we cannot guarantee that this policy is adhered to in every instance. Anaphylactic people within the TFS community or guests at the school are expected to use caution. If you wish to celebrate a birthday or a special event, nut-free cakes and treats can be ordered from Chartwells with advance notice, using the order form at tfs.catertrax.com. 3) Responsibilities Ensuring the safety of anaphylactic students in a school setting depends on the co-operation of the entire school community. To minimize risk of exposure, the school will provide training to its employees, reduce the risk of exposure to substances that cause anaphylaxis, and continue to educate parents and students about anaphylaxis. Other members of the TFS community also have responsibilities: Anaphylactic Students And Their Parents Parents of anaphylactic students must inform the school and submit all required forms. All Parents Respond cooperatively to requests from the school to follow guidelines, including those for a nut-restricted school environment. Encourage students to respect the needs of anaphylactic students and follow school policy and guidelines. All Students - Learn to recognize symptoms of anaphylactic reactions. - Avoid sharing food and trading snacks, makeup or musical instruments, especially with anaphylactic students. - Follow school policy and guidelines, especially about food restrictions and washing hands. - Refrain from bullying or teasing a student with an allergy. Staff Ensure that, for La p'tite école, the Junior School and the West Campus, Alert Sheets are posted in a prominent location in all teaching and common areas, and that for Senior School, a list of anaphylactic students is posted in all teaching and common areas. Disseminate information on anaphylaxis to students, in age-appropriate terms, using materials provided by the school. Encourage students not to share lunches or trade snacks, make-up or musical instruments and encourage anaphylactic students to eat only what they bring from home. Reinforce with all students the importance of hand washing before and after eating. 4) Emergency Response Plan Anaphylactic reactions occur when the body's sensitized immune system overreacts in response to the presence of a particular allergen. Anaphylaxis affects multiple body systems, including skin, upper and lower respiratory, gastro-intestinal and cardiovascular.
