1 4 T F S F O U N D AT I O N CELEBRATING THE OPENING OF LA TERRASSE A place of enjoyment, learning and community Past TFS Board Chair Judy Goldring recalls her upbringing fondly, treasuring memories of family dinners where her father would engage everyone in conversations and interesting discussions. Her understanding of the importance of shared meals has since informed her own home life and was a primary motivation to support the renovation of La Terrasse. "I wanted to replicate this in my own home," says Judy. "I believe any opportunity to join together and meet over a meal is an opportunity to exchange ideas and engage in each other's lives." Research shows that students who eat with family, teachers and peers perform better academically and grow into more grounded, engaged and confident a ults. "Sharing a meal together really is the oldest and most universal form of human connection, which is in part why I wanted to support the renewal of La Terrasse." Goldring was inspired to join other families in supporting the redevelopment of La Terrasse—including Max and Coralie Koeune, Sujay and Gina Shah, Rajay Shah and Priya Malde, and the Sprott Foundation. "La Terrasse was built 18 years ago for just 400 students," says Chef Thomas Brissiaud. "This was an essential project." Today, the TFS kitchen serves 1,500 students and staff, mo e than 600 of whom eat in La Terrasse over two lunch periods. Brissiaud and his team also prepare daily hot meals and snacks for delivery to the West Campus, La p'tite école and the Junior School. They also cater hundreds of TFS events each year. The reconfi uration of the lower-level kitchen has opened space upstairs, resulting in less waiting and fewer lines. Upgraded kitchen equipment supports the use of dishware and cutlery instead of plastic disposables—strengthening our environmental commitment. The cafeteria, servery and preparation areas were opened this fall, heralding the return to regular TFS life—and the meaningful return of friends having lunch with friends. With critical support from our community, TFS Foundation launched the A Seat at the Table campaign to raise the funds required to refurbish the cafeteria, build out the new lower-level food preparation area and enhance the kitchen's servery, as well as invest in commercial appliances. The new multi-use furniture also means La Terrasse can now pivot quickly from food service to educational activities and events. The improvements have increased efficie y, reduced crowding and enhanced the student experience. The extended Shah family, donors to A Seat at the Table campaign. "I'm so pleased with the result. La Terrasse has been transformed into a place of enjoyment, learning and community— exactly what we've come to expect from our school." Judy Goldring TFS Board Chair, 2019-2021
