Parents' Handbook 2022– 2023 39 - bringing the name of TFS into disrepute; - engaging in any types of bullying behaviours; - engaging in hate propaganda and other forms of behaviour motivated by hate or bias; - uttering a threat to inflict bodily harm; - using any object to threaten or intimidate another person; - inflicting or encouraging others to inflict bodily harm on themselves or another person; - causing injury to any person; - committing sexual assault; - being in possession of, or be under the influence of, or provide others with alcohol, cannabis (unless the individual has been authorized to use cannabis for medical purposes), illegal drugs or harmful substances; - providing others with alcohol, illegal drugs, or cannabis (unless the recipient is an individual who has been authorized to use cannabis for medical purposes); - being in possession of any weapon; - trafficking in weapons or harmful substances (defined as all illegal drugs, alcohol, cannabis, any mind or mood-altering substances other than alcohol, tobacco and over-the-counter drugs taken for nonmedicinal purposes, and medicinal substances prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner used by a student for non-medicinal purposes); - committing theft; and, - committing an act of vandalism that causes damage to school property or to property located on the premises of the school and other schools. The range of consequences that TFS will consider as the disciplinary response to serious student misconduct includes: - temporary or permanent removal from a school activity; - a special program or recess to complete work or a special assignment involving problem-solving and/or a reflective activity; - a verbal reminder of appropriate behaviour; - detention; - removal from class for a period of time; - community service; - loss of privileges; - repair/restitution for damaged or missing property; - a behavioural contract; - in-school suspension; - consultation with a Vice-Principal, Principal and/or other members of the support team; - formal suspension from school from between one school day to no more than 20 school days. In these instances, conditions for return to school will be discussed with parents and caregivers and students, in accordance with the school policy; and/or, - expulsion from the school. At the discretion of TFS, a student may be denied re-registration for the subsequent academic year, for reasons including, but not limited to, one or more acts of misconduct as set out above. 2. Discipline Process In determining whether an offence/situation of non- compliance has been committed and what sanction should be applied, TFS will employ procedures that: - are in proportion to the severity of the alleged offence; - ensure that a student and their parents and caregivers are aware of the complaint against the student; - take into account the previous history of the student and all other relevant factors; - ensure that a student has the opportunity to present fully and fairly their version of events and an explanation, and to have these taken into account by the decision-maker; and, - ensure that the decisions will be made in a fair and impartial way. If it is felt that a major violation of the TFS Code of Conduct has taken place (i.e., a suspendable offence),
