Parents' Handbook 2022– 2023 27 Our Debating and Public Speaking team has a strong reputation. Junior and Senior teams perform in the Fulford debates and compete, in English and French, against other independent and public schools. Debates can occur in the GTA, other cities of provinces and internationally. The Model United Nations (MUN) club has sent delegates to various seminars and competitions in Toronto, at Yale University, and at the United Nations in New York. Younger students are encouraged to get involved but generally the out-of-town conferences involve older students. Music includes Wind and String Ensembles, Jazz and Percussion Ensembles and Guitar Clubs, which rehearse in the morning, at lunch and after school. Our music ensembles compete at the Kiwanis Festival, MusicFest Canada and the Ontario Band Association, while individuals participate in the Canadian Independent Schools' Music Festival. Dramatic Arts: We produce one major drama or musical, usually every year. In addition, older students have the opportunity to perform their original works at school and at festivals, including the Festival Théâtre Action en milieu scolaire (FTAMS). Fashion and Dance Shows: The annual Fashion Show, organized by students in Level V, is an entertaining, energetic and kaleidoscopic night of fashion, art and creativity that raises funds for a sponsored non-profit community organization. The Dance Show, also an annual event organized and choreographed by students, is an artistically moving spectacle which showcases creativity and movement. It, too, raises funds for a non-profit organization that works to better the lives of those in our community. English and French Speaking Competitions: TFS provides significant public speaking experiences, such as our annual Verse and Prose (English) and Art Oratoire (French) competitions. TFS also sends competitors to the national Poetry in Voice competition. Student Journalism: Students can get involved with the school newspaper (Limited Edition), a monthly online publication, and the yearbook (Reflections). Math Contests: Students in each grade level have the opportunity to write major national exams, including Gauss, Fryer, Galois, Hypatia and Euclid, and are frequently recognized for their strong standings. Dances: Several school dances and movie nights are held throughout the year. This includes dances for Grades 6, 7 and Level I, as well as the semi-formal for Levels II to V. Spirit Days and Theme Weeks: Our student leaders – First Citizens, Citizens' Assembly Deputies, Prefects, House Heads, and Club and Society Leaders – organize Spirit Days and special themed days, including Community and Pink Days. They also work collaboratively to organize events and celebrate theme weeks such as Child Rights Week, Earth Week, Inclusion and Empathy, and Francophonie weeks for the entire Senior School. Student Leadership: Our student leaders have important, positive roles to play in our community. They model integrity, discernment, respect, engagement, effective communication and organization skills, and demonstrate balance between academic and co- curricular commitments and responsibilities. - First Citizens - The First Citizens (Premier Citoyen and Première Citoyenne) are Level V students who are selected through a committee and election process to be the student leaders of the whole school. They are role models, supporters, initiators and the primary liaisons between the student body and the leadership team.
