NICOLE DIRKS '19 First Year Student, Yale University New Haven, CT Nicole's ability to successfully balance academics and athletics is perhaps best illustrated by one special day in May, Level IV. She recalls feeling an intense pressure to perform as she prepared to face three very different challenges. Before she could don her TFS singlet to compete in the Metros, a Toronto- wide track and field competition, she had to write a math test and complete her IB English Literature oral exam. She aced both academic challenges. As for the race, she came first in her heat by 23 seconds, shaving six seconds off of her personal best. Nicole was just as elated to receive the S.W. Karrys Family Scholarship — thrilled to be recognized as a student-athlete in front of her teachers and peers, who often saw only the student half of her student-athlete identity. A writer at heart, Nicole has completed her first year at Yale University where she competes in NCAA-level cross-country, and has her sights set on a career in journalism. The S.W.
