ALEXANDRA FOGARTY '09
Resident Physician, Washington University
MD, Saba Medical School
St. Louis, MO
Winning the S.W. Karrys Family
Scholarship was especially meaningful
for Alexandra, as she had been
sidelined with a serious injury in Level
V. The hiatus gave her an opportunity
to reflect on what it meant to be an
athlete. She realized that coping with
injury, the heartbreak over not being
able to compete, and rehabilitation can
be just as glorious as winning medals.
Alexandra attended Bowdoin College
in Brunswick, Maine, graduating with
honours in romance languages (French
and Spanish literature) and with a
minor in chemistry. She competed
in collegiate alpine ski racing, NCAA
rowing and cycling while at Bowdoin.
After sustaining several injuries, she
turned to teaching and coaching.
Seeking adventure and life experience,
Alexandra chose Saba University in the
Dutch Caribbean to study medicine.
She is now a resident physician at
Washington University (St. Louis)
working in physical medicine and
rehabilitation. Alexandra draws upon
her personal experiences with injury to
assist patients living through their own
rehabilitation process.
