A consistent and disciplined student, Lauren's co-curricular forays at TFS were expansive. As a founding member of the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ) committee, a peer mentor, a volleyball player and an avid volunteer outside of school, Lauren went above and beyond to fulfill the creativity, activity and service component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program – to the extent of also achieving the outstanding Duke of Edinburgh's International Gold Award. Clearly passionate about helping others, Lauren's work on the EDIJ committee made a difference in the school's student leadership by encouraging them to bring certain issues to the forefront, while peer mentoring allowed her to connect with younger students and assist them with not only school work but their personal lives as well. Lauren volunteered at a day camp for youth and continues to do so. She also joined a Mully Children's Family (MCF) humanitarian mission to Kenya in 2019, helping to set up and run a medical clinic at an orphanage – an expedition she again undertook in the summer of 2023. With her competency in math and science, Lauren took HL physics and chemistry and gained a deeper appreciation of those subjects. She further pushed herself academically: "Through the IB, I was able to develop strategies that I could use to better understand the rigorous concepts being introduced, and it led me to choose a more challenging major in university," she said. Backed by a robust set of co-curriculars and a strong interest in medical technology, Lauren was accepted into the University of Waterloo's biomedical engineering program. She wants to further her goals by also completing a master of business administration (MBA), fusing her fascination with both business and medicine. She hopes to collaborate with others to improve medical techniques, create medical instruments or improve medical technology, something she has already begun discussing with biomedical engineers. At university, Lauren is looking to get more involved in volleyball and create equitable initiatives for women in engineering. She is interested in the humanitarian aspects of medicine and would like to explore other opportunities in this area as well.
