DESTINATION / DESTINATION University of Pennsylvania PROGRAMME / PROGRAM Management and Technology MARTIN T. Martin is an analytical thinker and a natural visionary. During his time at TFS, he explored a varied range of activities, such as being a member of the tennis team and the robotics club, a morning announcer, and editor-in-chief of Limited Edition, the Senior School's digital student newspaper, putting the voices of his classmates into the spotlight. Arriving at TFS in Grade 3, Martin enjoyed using the expansive resources available to students, including taking frequent trips to the libraries and operating the 3D printers to create training modules for others to use. Equally, TFS's interdisciplinary approach to making connections between subjects and various IB projects throughout the years informed his scholarly mind. "I started with an interest in math and computer science, and there are just so many ways at TFS to apply it to things, it is impossible to just continue on that path alone," Martin said. He remembers one particular occasion when he was able to develop connections to other subjects through completion of a social studies project. It sparked his desire to go deeper, to apply his knowledge of economics or science, for instance, to solve problems related to the world around him. Martin did just that, first competing in various math competitions, including the 2020 Canadian Computing Competition, where he placed first in Canada in the junior division. Wanting to challenge himself further, and with a strong interest in economics, he went on to represent Canada at the 2022 International Economics Olympiad and was declared "Absolute Winner," earning first place. Most of the questions and exercises required university-level knowledge, with some reaching the PhD level. He is now working with the competition's committee to write the questions for next year's Olympiad, and he will serve as a coach to the Canadian team in future competitions. After a very tough decision, Martin, TFS' 2023 recipient of the Governor General's Award, decided to apply his insightful mind to the University of Pennsylvania's Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology, which will lead to two degrees, one in economics from The Wharton School and the other in engineering from the School of Engineering and Applied Science. After his undergraduate studies are complete, Martin hopes to expand his education in the fields of finance and computer engineering to find innovative solutions for real life problems, perhaps pursuing a PhD along the way.
