16 TFS UNLOCKING BILINGUALISM LANGUAGE ACQUISITION Choosing a French education will make your children's English skills soar! This may sound surprising, but not to TFS insiders and language experts: studies have long shown that students immersed in a second language at school find their English skills are stronger. While initially immersed in French, TFS students begin formal English studies in Grade 2. Your children don't need you to do their homework Parents may worry about supporting their children if they don't speak the language of instruction. This is a common concern at TFS, as most families are non-French speakers. Nearly all schoolwork is done in class, with homework serving only to practise or review lessons taught during the day. Since homework is the student's responsibility, not the parents', our students become independent learners and resourceful problem-solvers early on. "Becoming bilingual is a massive experience! It speaks to increasing brain plasticity; our minds change as we experience different things. Ultimately bilingualism exercises the mind and opens another door—it's all good!" Dr. Ellen Bialystok Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology and Walter Gordon Research Chair of Lifespan Cognitive Development at York University, Associate Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute of the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care Congratulations on considering a bilingual education for your child. You will be amazed at what they will discover and learn and the skills they will develop as part of the substantial benefits of being taught, and learning, in French and English. As generations of parents have found out, those benefits are almost countless! IT'S CANADA: BILINGUAL AND BICULTURAL IS IN OUR DNA
