GOING OUT IN THE WORLD GLOBAL EDUCATION VIEWBOOK 35 Being there When learning about a culture, nothing comes as close to fully experiencing it than being immersed in the sights, sounds, history and tastes of a place. Learning in the real world Overnight trips directly linked to the curriculum start in Grade 3, with a sleepover at the Toronto Zoo. Grade 4 sees our students learn about government and governance, in French, in our nation's capital, Ottawa, while Grades 5 and 7, respectively, embark on outdoor learning and leadership camp adventures in Ontario and Quebec. Grade 6 students take a French-Canadian cultural, icy and athletic winter journey to Quebec City and the surrounding area. Living locally— internationally TFS believes in the power of exchanges, where students live with a local family, spend time with them and their student correspondent, visit important sites, but also go with their correspondent to classes at the host school. In fact, our Level I students and staff have been visiting high schools in Paris for over 20 years! Other exchanges include our Level III Spanish-language students visiting a school in Seville, Spain, and our West Campus Grade 7s visit to a school in Geneva, Switzerland. Cultural, competitive or arts-based, these trips have it all The optional trips we offer our students each have a distinct purpose in mind. Some are language, history and culturally based, such as excursions to Germany, Martinique, British Columbia— as seen through a First Nations' lens— and Atlanta, GA, for an overview, past and present, of Black history and rights. Others have a specific competition in mind, including trips taken by the senior members of our Model UN Club to locations, including New York and Morocco, for conferences, or those taken by our Robotics Club to cities hosting world championships, including Houston, where they visited NASA's space center. Then there are journeys on offer to students pursuing certain areas of study in the arts. Our visual artists have travelled to New York City, Montreal and Italy, all including hands-on workshops. TFS musicians meanwhile have also visited Italy, where they had chances to perform. Life changing. That's what our trips can become for our students—and your child. Local or global, natural or urban, TFS journeys give our students experiences that will last a lifetime. Bonding, making new friends, deep learning in authentic places, developing skills, finding joy. ese are just a few of the outcomes your child can anticipate. These are reciprocal arrangements, so by the time the correspondents from France, Spain and Switzerland travel to Toronto, all of the students are fast friends, and ours can't wait to show them around. TRAVEL WITH US AND SEE HOW FAR YOU CAN GO!
