TERRY FOX AT TFS TODAY On October 5, 2023, our deep connection to the Terry Fox Run culminated in a monumental event. Darrell Fox, senior advisor to the Terry Fox Foundation and younger brother of Terry Fox, and Isadore Sharp, founder of the Terry Fox Foundation and father to TFS alum Greg Sharp '77, namesake of our own House Sharp, were reunited after many years at the Toronto campus, so that students, staff and teachers could learn more about the history of the run. Both Darrell and Isadore took to the Junior and Senior School stages to discuss Terry's journey. "Terry was an average person – he was an average student, he was an average athlete – but one thing he had an abundance of was a never-give-up attitude," Darrell said. He explained that because of the research that stemmed from Terry's vision – to which TFS has contributed more than $500,000, an amount praised by Darrell – someone who has Terry's condition today now has an over 80% chance of survival, up from 20-30% during the 1980s. THE BEGINNING OF THE RUN At first, Darrell supported his brother during his run by accompanying his caravan to collect donations and answer questions from the public. Today, he works to share Terry's story internationally. "It's not his Canadian identity at all that is responsible for organizing the runs in other areas of the world. Cancer is everywhere. This is a story that translates into any language," Darrell said. "I have over the years sometimes gone back to the same school and I share the same story and get the same reaction. That's how powerful Terry's story was and is." Darrell also noted that Terry not only changed how we view cancer but also how we view those with physical disabilities. "It was unusual to see someone with a disability back then as often as you do now." When practising before his marathon started, Terry ran privately with track pants on, but then saw an opportunity to share his disability. But those who surrounded Terry never viewed him as a disabled person. "He was more able-bodied than I ever was," Darrell said. "He recognized he had the ability to offer something "He recognized he had the abili to offer something more than just cancer research. His focus was always on fundraising, but he also showed what could be accomplished on an artificial leg." — DARRELL FOX The story of Darrell Fox and Isadore Sharp continues in an extended video interview FUN FACT e Canadian Federal Gouvernment recently announced that Terry Fox will be featured on the next $5 bill. 22 ENTRE NOUS
