Thanks to the generosity of the TFS community and support directed to annual priorities each year, the TFS Foundation is able to provide grants to the school for equipment and technology upgrades and exciting acquisitions, which bring with them opportunities for exceptional experiential learning. One recent acquisition, a laser cutter, gave a student group just the tool they needed to turn their startup into a reality. Combining sustainability and knowledge gained as a member of the First Tech Challenge TFS Robotic Unicorns team, Level V student Aiwen H. founded LUMiNE, a company that repurposes plexiglass waste from the pandemic to create uniquely designed night lights. "The idea for our startup originated from seeing the amount of plexiglass waste our school had left over after COVID-19," says Aiwen, who serves as LUMiNE's president. "My role is to bring our team together and provide an overall direction for our company's progress. I manage and organize team meetings to delegate work and discuss company goals." Aiwen has also been the artist behind many of the venture's night light designs. "Without the laser cutter, LUMiNE as a company would probably not exist," says Jack Y., Level IV, the startup's vice-president. "Our night light is made up of a base that we source from a third party, while the plate is what we produce with repurposed plexiglass boards and the laser cutter. To remove the laser cutter would be to remove half of our product." Jack's role in the company includes taking meeting notes, overseeing LUMiNE's Shopify website and ensuring orders are produced on time and properly fulfilled. LUMiNE's team is composed of four other key members, including their head of sales Tristan K., head of marketing Camille C., head of production Vanessa L. and head of finance Ethan B. As head of sales, Tristan sells night lights at events, sets the company's sales targets and works with marketing to grow their venture and reach monthly goals. "With my participation in LUMiNE, I've gained experience in entrepreneurship and in running a small business," says Tristan. "Furthermore, as a member of the Robotic Unicorns, I've been able to improve my teamwork and leadership skills, as well as gain experience in the field of robotics, which is a passion I am considering pursuing in university." A Foundation for the Future To date, LUMiNE has sold over 100 night lights.
