The TFS Toronto campus is surrounded by the spectacular colours of the Don Valley ravine, all within close proximity to downtown Toronto. We know that climate anxie is real and that concerns about climate change can significantly affect young people's mental health and well-being. We also know that spending time in nature and fostering a strong connection to the natural world can have a positive, restorative impact. With access to 26 acres of the Don Valley ravine, TFS is well positioned to integrate outdoor education and nature immersion into its programming. "I got hit with the climate anxiety bug a few years ago and I didn't know what to do with all the bad news," says Level V student Sadie M. "I decided the only way to let out my frustration was by participating in what the school had to offer." Sadie, a TFS student since PK, has fond memories of spending time in the ravine learning alongside her classmates, participating in the annual Terry Fox Run and even filming an episode for TVOKids. Through her Middle Years Programme Personal Project, she explored the psychology behind climate ignorance. "I wanted to find solution- based actions so that I could be part of making a difference rather than just feeling worried," she explains. She joined the Nature Pod, got involved in the Ravine Restoration project and most recently was selected as an Eco Prefect. "I'm currently working on my Extended Essay, building on the work I did in Level III Biology and studying how human activity affects the black willow—a native species disappearing from Toronto ravines," she explains. "I'm focusing on how soil compaction impacts the tree's root strength." She has rooted and planted clippings in the science lab, observing and reporting on her findings. As Eco Prefect, Sadie is encouraging other students to get involved. "While climate change can feel overwhelming, there are concrete actions students can take, including research like I'm doing, which really feels beneficial." How ravine education encompasses all three pillars of our strategic plan: Thrive Through STEAM, Thrive with the Planet and Thrive at TFS and Beyond 11 TFS
