"For those of us who have had the good fortune to attend TFS, supporting the Entrance Scholarship program is the best way to give back. It's a way to ensure that TFS remains accessible, and to share our TFS experience with others." 12 | TFS – Canada's International School While Dr. Karandeep Sonu Gaind '86 was delivering his address to the graduating Class of 2012, it occurred to him that he was standing on the same spot from where he himself graduated more than a quarter century earlier, in 1986. "It was a surreal moment," recalls Dr. Gaind, somewhat bemused. "It was on the same spot where, in 1986, I was standing on a grassy field, and in 2012, I was standing inside a beautiful building." TFS has changed over the years, but some things have not, he adds thoughtfully, "namely, academic rigour, and the philosophy of openness and diversity." It was that academic rigour and openness that he and his parents liked about TFS. "But without a scholarship, I would not have been able to attend," says Dr. Gaind, who is now Chief of Psychiatry/ Medical Director of Mental Health at Humber River Hospital, Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association. Thanks to the informal scholarship program instituted by school founders Anna and Harry Giles, TFS scholarship recipients over the years went on to achieve great success in their chosen careers and make outstanding contributions to their communities. Today, Dr. Gaind is a leader in his field, and a renowned and passionate advocate for improvements in care of the mentally ill. In 2012, TFS celebrated Dr. Gaind's achievements with the Alumni of Distinction Award/Le prix de distinction des anciens élèves. Not surprisingly, the newly established TFS Entrance Scholarship program holds a special place in Dr. Gaind's heart. "The Entrance Scholarship program resonates with me. A scholarship opens the door to opportunity. For those of us who have had the good fortune to attend TFS, supporting the Entrance Scholarship program is the best way to give back. It's a way to ensure that TFS remains accessible, and to share our TFS experience with others." Sharing his TFS experience with a younger generation is something that Dr. Gaind already enjoys at home. With his son Dante, a former TFS student, and daughter Sabine, currently enrolled in Level II, Dr. Gaind happily reflects on this continuity. "You see your child in yourself and yourself in your child. It's remarkable." Remarkable indeed. Donor Prole Dr. Karandeep Sonu Gaind '86
