WHEN VISUAL ARTS TEACHER, Ms. Hatchell,
offered
Siena S. an opportunity in Grade 7 to
participate in the 2016 Our Safe
Spaces Project
exhibition,
Siena immediately said yes. The
Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival
provided students an opportunity to exhibit in
a professional
gallery, depicting spaces and
places in their lives where they
feel accepted,
comfortable
and safe. With more than 500
student submissions, Siena's photography
was chosen to be featured.

Level I
LAST SPRING, Grade 2 student Gabriel C. volunteered at an orphanage in Bangalore, India. With
a local cook, he helped prepare dinner, using local ingredients,
for 40 children. Gabriel said, "These
children do not have a mother or a
father, they do not have any money, but have a smile on their
faces and want to make the world a better place. Why do we complain about things if we have so
much? In the future, I want to help more people in need." He was so moved by the experience that
he shared it with his classmates as part of
a presentation revolving around cooperation. Gabriel's
teachers
appreciate his philanthropic nature.
