Shakespeare brings to mind a challenging language and abstract plot lines; however, Amanda Giles '08 instantly fell in love with his body of work. Her love for all things Shakespearean started at TFS in Ms. Grimsley's English class, where she was always asking to play one of the characters. Ms. Giles was especially interested in Macbeth and is still determined to play her favourite character, Lady Macbeth. She's played Maria in The Sound of Music and Gertrude in Loving Repeating, a role for which she was nominated for a Jeff Award in the best principal actress in a musical category. For Ms. Giles, the role is very important. She loves and resonates the most with art that tells a story, art that makes the audience think differently. To her, that is the purpose of art. "When playing a character, I always try to engage the audience," she states. "I feel like people can be stuck and art can break that mindset, which is really powerful." Attending TFS as the granddaughter of its founder, Harry Giles, did not faze Ms. Giles. "Honestly, it didn't really affect me," she recalls. "The best part about it was that teachers knew my grandmother, which was sweet because I never got to meet her." Throughout her TFS years, Ms. Giles was busy with co-curricular Amanda Giles by Nina S., Level IV The Class of 2008 graduated eight years f 2008 ago and already its members are making ready i positive impacts on the world. mpacts Entre Nous tasked four talented TFS student writers with interviewing and profiling an alumnus/a from this class, each of whom embodies the school's new motto and is making unique contributions within his or her community and beyond. 24 TFS ENTRE NOUS 2016
