She now works as the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute Chair in civil-military relations and assistant professor at the University of Calgary. Her main focus is currently on the impacts of technology and science on politics, specifically with regards to conflicts around resource extraction in northern Canada, as well as its consequences in reconciliation with Indigenous groups. In addition to running several active projects relevant to her research, Dr. Perić is also in charge of the Yukon Field School, which offers undergraduate students at the University of Calgary the opportunity to not only see first-hand the impacts of climate change and resource development projects in northern Canada, but also to build relationships with Indigenous communities. "It brings together the north and the south of Canada, a collaboration which makes for a better Canadian community." By Nicole D., Level IV S abrina Perić '99 has a strong belief that we should pursue what we love and prioritize exploring new cultures and meeting new people above all else. And that's exactly what she did after graduating from TFS, as she now explores her own passion as an environmental and historical anthropologist, focusing on relationships between politics and resource extraction, industrial practices and armed conflict in the world. Sent to TFS for its reputed challenging academics and French program from Grade 6 onwards, Dr. Perić thrived in the IB environment. Describing her experience as "formative in every way possible," Dr. Perić still uses the critical thinking skills and multilingualism acquired at TFS in her professional life. Furthermore, learning French pushed Dr. Perić to learn even more languages— five others to be exact. She remarks that this exposure to languages aided and guided her in her career: "Languages made me open and interested in other cultures and societies, and, as an anthropologist, that is basically what I do." In her time at TFS, Dr. Perić immersed herself in the opportunities offered at school by becoming an avid participant in clubs such as debating, Model UN and classics, representing her peers as a Student Council representative and working as editor of the school newspaper, Limited Edition. Not only did this allow her to develop public speaking skills, but it also contributed to her knack for inquiry. "One thing that I got from TFS was a sense of intellectual independence and creativity," she recalls. Dr. Perić began her post-secondary studies in theatre and Russian studies at Dartmouth College. Following the completion of her undergraduate degree, she worked in New York City for two years in theatre and fashion design; however, because she felt her appetite for intellectual challenge, developed at TFS, was going unsatisfied, Dr. Perić decided to go back to school. Completing her graduate studies in social anthropology at Harvard University, she pursued a special interest in the origins of conflict in an effort to understand the war in her native country, Croatia: "I really wanted to try to understand what happened in the war and why it happened the way it did."
