Level IIIs Pitch Green Light Bulb Idea to Airbnb THE KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY (TKS) IS A PROBLEM- SOLVING PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS AGED 13-17, founded by Silicon Valley innovators. During TKS sessions, students are guided by mentors from leading technology-based companies and collaboratively explore cutting-edge topics, while developing the skills required to create the future. During one session, students attending TKS learned about a great opportunity to hone their problem-solving skills with Airbnb. The folks at Airbnb were looking for creative ways to address the issue of accommodations for displaced refugees. Less than two weeks later, Level III students Sarah L-M. and Tanya C. conducted thorough research and, late one night, inspired by the hit song Green Light by Academic ambition Une école exigeante STUDENT CLASSICS CONFERENCE: VENIMUS, VIDIMUS, VICIMUS LAST SPRING, 18 SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM GRADE 7 TO LEVEL III PARTICIPATED IN and helped organize the four-day Ontario Student Classics Conference at Brock University. TFS students won 27 ribbons, six team placements and two trophies in competitive individual and group events, that spanned the academic, creative and athletic realms, all focused on the classical world of ancient Greece and Rome. TFS reasserted its excellence in Latin oral reading, with all six of our readers placing in their competitions, which brought the Gordon Brooks trophy for oral Latin reading back to TFS for the 11th time, a conference record. For her outstanding first place reading of a satirical Horace poem at the senior level, Hannah H. won the Consulate of PYP: CONNECTING LEARNING TO THE REAL WORLD THE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM (PYP) ENCOMPASSES A RANGE OF transdisciplinary themes that speak directly to the world we live in. During the 2016-17 academic year, Grade 3 students learned about How the World Works, Grade 5s about the Human Body, and Pre-Kindergarteners discovered how to interpret art through their How We Express Ourselves unit of inquiry. In April 2017, the Grade 5 students at the West Campus focused on Sharing the Planet. They conducted extensive research to help solve global problems and found ways to take action. Some of the topics included the impact poaching has on endangered species, segregation, poverty, how inequalities in education affect global societies, and the threat to our ecosystem, planet and living organisms from pollution. Lorde, came up with the Green Light Bulb concept. A green light bulb icon would appear on property listings within the Airbnb family of offerings willing to help. Executives at Airbnb were so impressed with their concept and detailed marketing strategies that they invited Sarah and Tanya to be a part of a group to visit and present their idea at Airbnb's headquarters in California over the November break. Italy Trophy for Latin Oral Reading, extending a long line of TFS winners of this handsome award. Our 18 academic awards, led by Daniel F.'s five ribbons, saw TFS ranked fourth in total and fifth in per capita academic points, as well as being recognized for excellence in oral mythology, thanks to the great work of Grade 7 student Ella C. and Level III student Layal F. TFS again excelled in creative events, with TFS' skit, written by and starring Layal F. and Hannah H., placing second, our chariot decoration, led by Hannah H., placing third, and our archaeologists, led by Daniel F., placing fourth. These, along with a couple of high-ranking creative projects by Alyssa S. and Daniel F., ranked TFS fourth in per capita creative achievement.
