Societies: Through Awareness, Students Take Action LAUNCHED AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF OUR NEW VISION, mission, values and motto, 23 Senior School societies were introduced to foster personal development and active citizenship. Deliberately cast wide, the topics include human rights, mental health, financial skills, the environment and politics, among others. As one example, this year our Grade 7 students are learning about animal welfare and, through discussion and action, are deepening their understanding of the dialogue now taking place about the relationship between humans, food production animals and companion animals. Meanwhile the Mental Health Awareness Project (MHAP) is raising awareness and taking action to inspire change. Their goal is to promote and advocate for positive mental health, while dispelling the stigma around mental health issues and letting students know that their feelings and opinions are not only heard, but valued and acted upon. Students' White Night at Nuit Blanche TFS EDUCATORS JEAN-PIERRE PILAPRAT AND VICKY FROU, along with sound specialist and actor Lubo Brezina, organized a performance with three Senior School students, India S., Angela S. and Sepideh A. They performed In Praise of this Tree, an allegorical play written by an anonymous 16-year old that depicts the devastating effects of pollution on the Earth. WEST CAMPUS SONGBIRDS TFS' WEST CAMPUS SENIOR CHOIR PERFORMED at the Toronto Kiwanis Festival, delighting their audience with a beautiful rendition of "Kusimama," an African song, and "Klee Wyck," a song penned by Canadian songwriter Brian Tate and inspired by Emily Carr's painting of the same name. )RUWKH/RYHRI%XWWHUÁLHV AT LA P'TITE ÉCOLE, GRADE 1 STUDENT HANNAH B. WAS SO PASSIONATE about helping monarch butterflies that she started her own home sanctuary this summer, along with her dad Michael (a TFS alumnus). In nature, monarchs see approximately a 2% success rate in emerging from their chrysalis state, but at Hannah's sanctuary, she saw a 97% success rate. Having released approximately 300 butterflies, her last one on October 13, they have now joined the 100,000,000 others in the mountains of Michoacan, in central Mexico. In honour of her conservation actions, Hannah now has her own blog on the Nature Conservancy of Canada website.
