Parents' Handbook 2019 – 2020 33 Community Policies CODE OF CONDUCT (ABRIDGED VERSION) The aim of TFS – Canada's International School ("TFS") is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. TFS pledges to help its students to develop an ethical sense of citizenship based on the four primary values of integrity, discernment, respect and engagement. A TFS citizen represents the school's values and promotes responsibility, courtesy, compassion, civility, cooperation and academic ambition in a safe learning and teaching environment. They demonstrate honesty and integrity at all times, respects people and property in the community, and accepts responsibility for his/ her work and behaviour. TFS, as an educational organization, is committed to a Code of Conduct that reflects the attributes of the TFS motto, values, mission and vision. As members of the TFS learning community, we are committed to the ongoing development of these characteristics and values in ourselves and others. We are all educators and learners in this pursuit. TFS fosters a positive school climate where all members of the school's community feel welcomed, nurtured, accepted, comfortable, supported and respected; share responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe climate; and, are accountable for their actions. Responsible citizenship involves active engagement in the civic life of the school and its community. Through this engagement, its citizens become aware of their rights and take responsibility for protecting those rights and the rights of others, as they make a positive contribution to the school. This Code of Conduct is consistent with the Education Act and policies of the Ministry of Education including: Policy/Program Memorandum No. 128: The Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct; Policy/Program Memorandum No. 144: Bullying Prevention and Intervention, and Policy/Program Memorandum No. 145: Progressive Discipline and Promoting Positive Student Behaviour. 1) STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR The Code of Conduct embodies the school's values – integrity, discernment, respect and engagement – and is intended to provide a guideline for the entire community. By enrolling at TFS, students and their parents and caregivers automatically assume the obligation to accept the spirit of the Code of Conduct and to comply with its provisions. Central to the Code of Conduct is the understanding that students will follow certain standards of behaviour. Self-discipline and a willingness to accept responsibility for one's actions and conduct are fundamental to the Code of Conduct. Respect, Civility and Responsible Citizenship All members of the school community must: - respect and comply with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws; - demonstrate honesty, dignity and integrity; - respect differences in people, their ideas and their opinions; - promote responsible citizenship by encouraging appropriate participation in the life of the school community; - promote a positive school climate; - treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, and especially when there is disagreement;
