The chemistry of bread Grade 4 classes participated in the annual Défi scientifique organized by French International Schools of North America (FISNA). This year, the challenge was centred around culinary chemistry. TFS students chose to focus on bread, a universal food that unites people from around the world. They analyzed the components of different types of bread, conducted experiments to understand how to use yeast, and tested the chemical reactions of fermentation. Building their own formula, they wrote a delicious bread recipe that was featured in an electronic book published by FISNA. Celebrating China TFS' China Week in February came just in time for the Lunar New Year. La p'tite école, Junior School and West Campus students were greeted by the wonderful melodies of traditional Chinese music, enjoyed sweet and savoury snacks, and learned about the rich history of China before watching the traditional Lion Dance. At the Senior School, Mandarin- language students from Grade 6 to Level IV exhibited Chinese artwork to educate their classmates on the significance of the Lunar New Year. Some Level II and Level III students participated in a celebration organized at Shangri-La Banquet and Convention Centre, together with Mandarin learners from other Toronto schools. After a lunch feast, they got to explore the Chinese market at Pacific Mall, North America's largest Asian mall. TFS 05 Embracing the linguistic diversity of our community This year, La p'tite école students were treated to unique story- reading sessions, with volunteer parents reading children's tales in their mother tongue. Hearing their classmates' parents speak Hindi, Portuguese, Mandarin, Farsi, Italian, French or Spanish sparks students' interest in multilingualism, as well as an appreciation for diversity.
