section"). It incorporates the Ontario play-based philosophy as well as the IB framework of inquiry. The learning experiences offered in the program are based on the fact that children learn primarily through play and have unique needs and interests. Important development occurs at each age in all areas of human functioning: social, emotional, physical, linguistic and cognitive. TFS' warm and nurturing program is designed to stimulate learning through a range of engaging activities. TFS educators create a supportive and motivating environment that provides opportunities for children to express themselves and, at the same time, to develop their potential, their skills, their autonomy and their self-esteem in a French-speaking environment. The homeroom teacher is seconded by an Early Childhood Educator and the maximum staff/child ratio is 1:8. TFS provides support to students and their families through the Learning Forum, staffed with specialists who work with students and families as required (resource teachers and occupational therapists or speech therapists through CCAC). Social and Emotional Development: As they progress through the program, children learn how to function in a group, to interact with others and to socialize. Educators support these aspects of development with in-group activities and in situations that require children to collaborate with each other, indoors and outdoors. As they address the challenges presented by these activities, children develop self-confidence, learn to respect rules and resolve conflicts. Physical and Motor Development: Young children develop gross motor control through activities such as walking, running, throwing, catching, jumping or climbing: daily physical activity is part of the curriculum and our PK students will be able to use one of the gymnasia in case of inclement weather. Fine motor skills are developed through activities that include painting and drawing, cutting along lines, tracing and, by the end of the year, starting to write letters. These types of activities are conducted indoors and outdoors through play and inquiry. Language Development: Children learn to understand others and to express themselves through oral communication. They increase their vocabulary and their phonemic awareness from a very early age. Our PK program introduces children to French through a method that takes their language maturity into account: activities include music, songs, stories, dance and drama.
