Parents' Handbook 2021– 2022 21 University Counselling Representing a core aspect of their TFS education, the University Counselling team guides senior students through career exploration, considerations of universities and programs, and ultimately through the process of applying to post-secondary institutions in Canada and internationally. We purposefully foster our students' independence of thought, as they contemplate their continuing development as individuals, and citizens. All Senior School parents and students are invited to attend: - University information presentations - Many university recruitment and admission officers visit TFS annually. All students and parents are welcome to attend these lunchtime sessions; - University Dialogue Day in October, Level III - V students will have a full day of virtual programming on university choices, programs, student life and career development. They will hear from admission recruiters from universities around the world and TFS alumni.; and - Alumni student events - The University Counselling team, in partnership with Alumni Relations, provides ongoing programs for students to connect with alumni. Key events include career and university lunches and Campus Connections. Campus Connections is a resource provided to graduating students to help ease the transition to post- secondary education. The program allows students to contact older alumni for university advice through email and virtual hangouts. Other University and Career Planning Resources Include: - College and university information and fairs in the GTA; - Web applications - These include Myblueprint, Ontario Universities Information, and UCAS among others; - Scholarship and financial aid information and applications; - Criteria and applications for numerous scholarships, along with eligibility information for financial assistance; - Standardized test preparation - TFS administers the PSAT to interested Level III and IV students and provides support and resources for the TOEFL, SAT and ACT tests, including test registration information, booklets, preparation courses, and workshops; and - Application essay writing and scholarship workshops. LANGUAGE LAB AND RESOURCE CENTRE (LLRC) The LLRC houses advanced digital software and a computer system that handles high-definition audio and voice recording. We aim for active learners instead of passive actors. As TFS emphasizes student-centred learning to facilitate a student's development of skills, we provide them with the experience of second-language learning in close-to- real situations, and opportunities to interact with peers and other online resources. These varied resources heighten each student's precision and confidence when communicating socially. We encourage students to visit the LLRC and recording studios to rehearse their oral exams, and English or French poems for class or competitive presentations. With our software, we can import media files, digitize new content, build exercises, organize assignments, track classes, store student responses and record students during pair activities.
