Parents' Handbook 2022– 2023 31 CODE OF CONDUCT (ABRIDGED VERSION) The aim of TFS – Canada's International school ("TFS") is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. TFS pledges to help its students develop an ethical sense of citizenship based on the four primary values of integrity, discernment, respect and engagement. A TFS citizen represents the school's values and promotes responsibility, courtesy, compassion, civility, cooperation and academic ambition in a safe learning and teaching environment. They demonstrate honesty and integrity at all times, respect people and property in the community, and accept responsibility for their work and behaviour. TFS fosters a positive school climate where all members of the school's community feel safe, welcomed, nurtured, accepted, comfortable, supported and respected; share responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe climate; and are accountable for their actions. Responsible citizenship involves active engagement in the civic life of the school and its community. Through this engagement, its citizens become aware of their rights and take responsibility for protecting those rights and the rights of others, as they make a positive contribution to the school. 1) SCOPE OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT The standards of behaviour apply: - on TFS property, including at lunch and recess; - in a virtual learning environment; - while travelling on a school bus that is owned by TFS or that is under contract to TFS; - during TFS in-school and out-of-school activities and events, including sports; - on school-sponsored field trips, excursions and trips; - during off-site TFS-sponsored activities; and, - in circumstances where engaging in an activity in person or electronically could have a negative impact on the TFS community. 2) STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR The Code of Conduct embodies the school's values - integrity, discernment, respect and engagement - and is intended to provide a guideline for the entire community. Under the Ontario Human Rights Code, every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods and facilities, without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, age, marital status, family status, or disability. Inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour towards another member of the community requires a serious response. Respect, Civility and Responsible Citizenship All members of the school community must: - respect and comply with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws; - comply with the Code of Conduct; - demonstrate honesty, dignity and integrity; - respect differences in people, their ideas and their opinions; - promote responsible citizenship by encouraging appropriate participation in the life of the school community; - promote a positive school climate; - treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, and especially when there is disagreement; Community Policies
