From the moment students enter our doors we strive to help them become responsible and successful global citizens by imbuing them with the knowledge, skills and mindset they need to not only accomplish great things, but to make the world a better place for all. Every year, we seek out alumni who exemplify our vision of global citizenship to honour their accomplishments and to share their inspiring stories with our greater community through our Alumni of Distinction Awards. The awards provide an opportunity to recognize the success of older alumni through the Alumni of Distinction Award known as Le prix de distinction des anciens élèves, and to celebrate the achievements of younger alumni through the Young Alumni of Distinction Award, known as Le prix de distinction des jeunes diplômés. "Our community of alumni award recipients inspires current students and illustrate the world of possibilities for our graduates," says Norman Gaudet, Head of School. "In 2022, it is really amazing to be able to bring our greater community of alumni, current and former staff and parents together in person to celebrate the year's recipients and hear their stories." Meet our 2022 Alumni of Distinction Award winners Advocate for democracy and justice, accomplished lawyer, corporate CEO and occasional songwriter Peter Biro '78 works across disciplines to help build a better world for humankind, contributing his efforts to causes as diverse as civic education and animal welfare, and leading both in the corporate world and in the not-for-profit sector. Through his varied pursuits, he embodies exactly the sort of global citizenship and innovative mindset we strive to cultivate in our student body. Over the course of his career, Peter has practiced as a human rights and litigation lawyer at top Bay Street firms, sat on multiple non-profit boards, and engaged in advocacy for diverse causes. He launched his law career at Goodman and Carr LLP, where he spent 14 years, rising from Associate to Partner, and went on to spend four years as Partner at WeirFoulds LLP, one of Canada's oldest and most distinguished law firms. His past board commitments include Governor on the Board of Governors of the University of Haifa, and Chair Emeritus and Past Chair of the Jane Goodall Institute. Peter's advocacy work includes working to expose and combat police corruption in major urban centres, and supporting animal rights and wildlife conservation efforts. These days, he keeps busy advocating for civic engagement in democratic processes as founder of SECTION 1, leading a world-class electro-optic equipment company as its CEO, and working on other projects. At SECTION 1, Peter and his team work to protect democracy by engaging citizens of all ages and at all stages of life in learning about basic civics, potential threats to democracy and their roles in protecting its integrity through workshops, lectures, conferences and more. Peter is also a writer, occasional songwriter, and a regular visitor to TFS to engage with our students. He is the editor of Constitutional Democracy Under Stress: A Time For Heroic Citizenship, and of the forthcoming volume, The Notwithstanding Clause at 40: Canadian Constitutional Democracy at a Crossroads. It was at TFS that I was first exposed to some of the great writers, the major thinkers, and most consequentially, to the insight that complex problems are best understood and addressed through interdisciplinary inquiry."
