ccording to her sister, Gabriela, "Lucia is on
fire." Nominated for Canada's prestigious
Lieutenant Governor Athletic Awards in
2020, Lucia is garnering a lot of attention these days
as a middle-distance specialist in both cross-country
and track and field. Entering her final year in civil and
mineral engineering at the University of Toronto, Lucia is
pursuing a sustainable energy minor and her certificate
in artificial intelligence engineering. Like Gabriela,
however, she is passionate about running and deeply
committed to her sport right now. The Pan Am Junior
gold medallist, who was named U of T's female rookie of
the year in 2016-17, has since racked up an impressive
roster of wins and accolades as a varsity Blues athlete.
In 2018, she took gold at the OUA Championships
(track and field) in the 1000 m and in the 1500 m. In
2019, in cross-country, she won gold in both the OUA
Championships and the U Sports Championships. In
February 2020, she set an under-23 Canadian record
at the Boston University Scarlet and White Indoor
Invitational. Then, at the 2020 U SPORTS Track and
Field Championships in Edmonton in March, she won
gold for both the 1000 m and 1500 m. "Receiving the S.W. Karrys Family Scholarship
was a great confidence booster," says Lucia. "It reminds me every day to uphold the
standards it represents, which is something I hold close to my heart."
