20 Parents' Handbook 2024– 2025 university programs and decision-making. Senior School Learning Strategists Learning specialists provide support to students with identified and non-identified learning needs, and assist them in developing effective learning strategies to optimize academic success. These include help with study skills, test preparation and test taking, and independent and classroom learning strategies. Learning specialists work with students through their guidance class, or during spares, in the Learning Forum. For parents, the first step in referral to the Learning Forum is through the guidance counsellors who work closely with the learning specialist teachers. The Senior Learning Forum team is also supported by the Test Centre Coordinator. Other Learning Resources Include: - The Test Centre provides a supervised location for students with identified learning needs and individual accommodations; - The Test Centre is staffed by a full-time Educational Coordinator; - Peer Mentors are trained senior students who volunteer their time to mentor students in many age groups, including Grades 6, 7 and Level I, to help them with time management, organization, homework, studying for tests and subject-specific matters. They work under the supervision of the learning specialists and guidance counsellors; - Homework Club after school is recommended for students who are developing their independent homework skills. Students are referred to the Homework Club through their teachers or Guidance Counsellors; - French and math clinics occur after school by referral from teachers; and - Exam, test-taking and study skills workshops and mini-courses occur throughout the year, especially before exam periods. University Counselling Representing a core aspect of their TFS education, the University Counselling team guides senior students through career exploration, considerations of universities and programs, and ultimately through the process of applying to post-secondary institutions in Canada and internationally. We purposefully foster our students' independence of thought, as they contemplate their continuing development as individuals, and citizens. Office Hours: 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, or by appointment. Nawal Adwan, University Counselling and Guidance Coordinator 416-484-6980, ext. 4291 | nadwan@tfs.ca All Senior School parents and students are invited to attend: - University information presentations: many university recruitment and admission officers visit TFS annually. All students and parents are welcome to attend these lunchtime mini-fairs and sessions; - Alumni student events: the University Counselling team, in partnership with Alumni Relations, provides ongoing programs for students to connect with alumni. Key events include the Career Spotlight series, U.S. Thanksgiving Alumni Panel, Level III Le Stage Internship, university information evenings, and Campus Connections. Campus Connections is a resource provided to graduating students to help ease the transition to post-secondary education. The program allows students to contact older alumni for university advice through email and virtual hangouts.
