Leading Others to Success DESTINATION / DESTINATION McMaster University PROGRAMME / PROGRAM Life Sciences ASHWIN C. As a gregarious, natural-born leader, driving initiatives to benefit his fellow students was always important to Ashwin. A deputy on the student council from Grade 6 to Level III, a member of the athletics council, athletics prefect in Level IV and, most recently, Premier citoyen in Level V, Ashwin sought to be a leader in all areas in which he took part. Ashwin has played competitive tennis for almost his entire life, and when he joined the TFS tennis team, it drove his ambitious spirit even further. In his final years at TFS, Ashwin made sure the school had enough players and interest to warrant a tennis team. He would band together his fellow classmates to form a roster and, over the last two years, they qualified for first seed in Division 1 of the Council of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association (CISAA). It was this commitment and leadership that helped Ashwin become the sociable person he is today. He enjoys being able to bring his ideas to fruition and develop connections with people to create change. One of his first directives as Premier citoyen was to organize an assembly for students where he led a documentary style presentation on Asian culture in Toronto as part of Asian Heritage Month. It was a project that united many of his classmates. Such camaraderie was something Ashwin sought in every one of his activities at school. In his favourite class, HL biology, he remembers sharing "moments that created a community who simply loved the subject," rather than being part of a group only there to achieve a high grade. Now attending McMaster University to study life sciences, Ashwin wants to become a physician specializing in cardiology, neurology or internal medicine. He also wants to study in other places in Canada, such as Vancouver. Having an entrepreneurial bent, and almost majoring in business, he would also like to open up a side venture combining his Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) oriented interests.
