10 TFS THE FRENCH AND THE ONTARIO PROGRAMS French National Curriculum (PK to Level II / Grade 9) THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Ontario Curriculum (Grade 1 to Level V / Grade 12) The French curriculum can go a long way. Parker Keeley '21, who started TFS when he was three, credits the school with shaping him into the well-rounded individual he is today. It wasn't until his final year, though, that he discovered exactly where TFS could take him—across the Atlantic to study at one of France's most distinguished universities, Sciences Po. "My family had no ties to France, but when I started at Sciences Po, I quickly realized how much I had in common with the French students. This helped me integrate and served as a bridge for me as an international student." Parker has chosen to pursue a master's degree at Sciences Po, which will not only earn him a prestigious diploma but also grant him French citizenship. Their passport to the world The French curriculum starts in Pre-Kindergarten (PK) and ends in Level II (Grade 9), when students take a set of exams culminating in their very first diploma, France's diplôme national du brevet, or the Brevet Diploma. Our students are not only immersed in a new language, they engage in a curriculum that sets them apart from their peers across Ontario. Recognized by the French Ministry of Education since 1984, our school offers the French National curriculum known for its high academic standards and comprehensive approach, fostering intellectual curiosity and a global perspective. It is also a rigorous and structured system designed to provide students with a broad and balanced education, emphasizing critical thinking, analytical skills and a deep understanding of subjects such as math, sciences, history, geography, languages and the arts. Our French curriculum teachers bring extensive experience from French schools around the world, expanding our educational environment with a vast range of international perspectives. Both in and outside of class, they nurture our students as well-rounded individuals who are high academic achievers, culturally aware, responsible citizens, and well-prepared for higher education and future career success. Cultivating strong Canadian roots The Ontario curriculum is introduced in Grade 1 and continues through to high school graduation, marked by our students receiving their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and, at the same time, their IB Diploma. While TFS has an international outlook, we are first and foremost a Canadian school. Our name—Toronto French School—reflects our commitment to being anchored in Toronto and teaching in both French and English. The very reason our founders Anna and Harry Giles established the school was to support Canada's bilingual heritage, recognizing the need for well-educated children fluent in both official languages (see TFS' history page 4). Students at TFS come from local neighbourhoods and from families around the globe who have chosen to settle in the Toronto area. We are committed to imparting to them Canadian culture and values. Through the Ontario curriculum, our education prioritizes inclusion and diversity. We place a strong emphasis on critical literacy and encourage students to explore Canada's history and culture, including the heritage of our First Nations people, as this foundation fosters active participation in the political and social life of their community. Renowned for its excellence in literacy, numeracy, problem- solving and with a focus on well-being, the Ontario curriculum aligns with the French within the framework of the IB's methodology. Every year, typically 100% of the TFS graduating class are named Ontario Scholars — a strong statement when they apply to universities in Canada and around the world. A unique, bilingual Canadian school with a strong French flair and an international outlook Take the curricula of France and Ontario and what you get is a formidable academic program that combines two distinct yet complementary systems that are more than the sum of their parts.
