by NADÈGE P. Toronto Campus What is a residential school? That's what went through my mind when I heard we would study this unit in Grade 6. Grade 6 students prepping the ground for the tree planting ceremony. I had no idea that this subject would have such a strong impact on me. In this unit we went on a field trip to see a former residential school, we read the book, My Name is Seepeetza, by Shirley Sterling, and we had a native tree planting ceremony. Visiting a former residential school sent shivers down my spine. The sense of fear still echoed through the corridors. I imagined the young Aboriginal children forced to leave their families at such a young age and adapt to a life that was full of abuse and fear. How did they survive? Who could they turn to? The schools tried to erase their identities and their pride in who they were. The book, My Name is Seepeetza, was even more disturbing. It is about a 12-year-old girl and her experiences at a residential school. I could relate to her because we were the same age. However, I could not imagine being forced to be away from my family and to live in fear of my teachers. She was all alone. It was heartbreaking. Finally, we had a tree planting ceremony. We planted a tree in the TFS ravine while listening to a Chief Elder sing an Aboriginal song. While doing this, I was reminded of how close the First Nations people are to nature. It was a hopeful moment, symbolizing life and growth. The Aboriginal people will never forget their painful past, but they will always celebrate their future. At TFS, we have the opportunity to grow in a supportive and caring community. And for that, I am grateful. Entre Nous asked two current Grade 7 students to reflect on this complex topic. These are their stories. 22 TFS ENTRE NOUS 2015
