During the 2014-2015 school year, students in Grade 6 at both campuses took part in TFS' first unit of study on residential schools, in the same year that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its report. The unit included reading about the life of a residential school student and visiting a former residential school, as well as taking part in a smudging ceremony, conducted by TFS alumnus and honorary Anishinaabe band member Dr. Michael Dan '78, and a tree-planting in TFS' ravine, overseen by a native elder. As a history lesson for today's real world, and an examination of a tragic and misguided past, the unit of study was deeply felt by our students. Inside the Lives of Others FEATURE History doesn't only occupy the distant past, seemingly so removed from the present that we can barely comprehend its import to the here and now. 21 TFS ENTRE NOUS 2015
