INSPIRED BY O'KEEFFE AND PICASSO ART IS A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE and expression, and our students' creativity is often inspired by renowned artists. Grade 3 students examined the works of Georgia O'Keeffe, particularly her large flowers. They studied abstraction and learned to combine oil pastels and watercolour paint within colour families. Their peers in Grade 5 took a closer look at Picasso's art and received several demonstrations on portraiture. They learned how to draw components of a portrait and created their own, Picasso-style, resulting in beautiful works of art. FILMMAKERS FOR A DAY GRADE 5 STUDENTS EXPERIENCED a "day in a filmmaker's life" during a workshop at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Students were immersed in planning, pitching, shooting and producing a short documentary, using professional equipment. Within a week, they were able to watch their very own final cut. Le printemps des poètes LA P'TITE ÉCOLE DEDICATED a full week to poetry during Le printemps des poètes, fostering the art of listening, while sparking students' imagination and teaching them how to express themselves. Classes at all grade levels took part in poetic activities. Some students recited poems, while others wrote their own. Parents were invited to read poems in their native language, in their child's classroom. Teachers also gathered students during recess and read poems under the Poetry Umbrella and a beautiful Poetry Tree was displayed at the entrance of La p'tite école. TFS' STUDENT MAGAZINE, Limited Edition, received accolades at the Toronto Star's high school newspaper awards, which recognizes the best in secondary school journalism. Placing runner-up for best newspaper in the 15 staff and under category, the award acknowledged the excellent work of magazine editor Kathleen Chen '16 and her team. Judges evaluated more than 600 submissions. TFS' LEVEL I BAND participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival, attaining a gold award for their outstanding performance. Our musicians were noted for their stage presence, discipline, tempo, sound, rhythmic playing and great energy. Eighty-four TFS musicians performed at the 2016 Ontario Band Association Concert Band Festival. The Junior Wind Ensemble won a silver at the B200 level and the Senior Wind Ensemble also achieved a silver, in the very challenging B500 level. The audience at the MusicFest national finals in Ottawa were treated to a thrilling performance by the Senior Wind Ensemble. Their hard work and diligent practice led to winning the silver award in the Concert Band division. ARTS ARTS FESTIVAL D'ART ORATOIRE EVERY YEAR, Grade 6 and 7 West Campus students participate in the Concours/festival d'art oratoire, a public speaking contest sponsored by the Canadian Parents for French (CPF) and the Ontario Modern Languages Teachers' Association.
