ACADEMICS ACADEMICS An Author in the Classroom TORONTO-BASED FRANCO-ONTARIAN AUTHOR, Mireille Messier, paid a visit this past spring to our Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1 students at La p'tite école. Mme Messier has published over a dozen children's books (most in French) and several articles for youth magazines. During her visit with our young students, she read one of her books and discussed her writing process. She also shared great tips on how to start writing their own book. The children were engaged and eager to put pen to paper; she may have inspired a future best-selling author! Students Fighting Against Poverty AS PART OF THEIR ACTION PLAN for their PYP exhibition project on poverty, Grade 5 students Chloe B., Maddy T., Dylan W. and Ben V. volunteered at New Circles, a not-for-profit agency that builds strong and caring communities by providing basic necessities to those living in poverty. With the help and mentorship of their teachers, Aylin Cil and Melissa Lem, they learned about the organization's core mission and experienced it first-hand by sorting and organizing garments for the GLOW (Gently Loved Outfits to Wear) market. Inspired By Mathematics And Computer Science SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS took part in several math competitions developed and administered by the Canadian Mathematical Society and Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo. The competitions provide teachers with unique student enrichment activities to inspire the next generation of students to develop an interest in and love for mathematics and computer science. TFS students succeeded in various categories, bringing back five medals and 26 certificates of honour, and the majority of TFS participants performed above the national average. GRADE 7 GERMAN-LANGUAGE STUDENTS from the West Campus ranked first and second in a Canada-wide podcasting competition organized by the ZfA (Central Agency for Schools Abroad), featuring schools that teach German as a foreign language. Each student group created and presented a short film depicting the theme of "clothing or fashion." Our students did a phenomenal job both in front of and behind the camera. Herzlichen Glückwunsch! 7 TFS ENTRE NOUS 2016
