32 Parents' Handbook 2022– 2023 - respect diversity and treat others fairly, regardless of, for example, race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status, or disability; - use appropriate, polite, and respectful language; - respect the rights of others; - show proper care and regard for the rights, property, and safety of themselves and others; - avoid all types of violent acts; - demonstrate respect for both the school and global environments; - take appropriate measures to help those in need; - seek assistance from a member of the school staff, if necessary, to resolve conflict peacefully; - respect all members of the school community by exhibiting behaviour that avoids and rejects all forms of intimidation, harassment, racism and discrimination; - respect the need of others to work in an environment that is conducive to learning and teaching, including by ensuring that personal mobile devices are only used during instructional time for the educational and other permitted purposes outlined herein and in the school's Policy on Restrictions on Classroom Use of Personal Mobile Devices; - not swear at a teacher or at another person in a position of authority. - not commit academic dishonesty; - follow the direction of persons in positions of authority; and, - create a school environment that is conducive to learning and teaching. Personal mobile devices may be used during instructional time under the following circumstances: - for educational purposes, as directed by an educator; - for health and medical purposes; or - to support special education needs. Safety All members of the school community must: - obey traffic rules when arriving, leaving and while on school property; - refrain from bringing anything to school that may compromise personal safety, or the safety of others; and, - demonstrate appropriate conduct and manners at all times. Members of the school community must not: - engage in bullying or cyber-bullying behaviours, whether it is bullying (in person) or cyber-bullying (electronically); - threaten or intimidate another person; - commit physical, verbal or sexual assault; - be in possession of any weapon and/or illegal drugs; - traffic weapons and/or illegal drugs; - commit theft or robbery; - use any object to threaten or intimidate another person; - cause injury to any person; - be in possession of, or be under the influence of, or provide others with alcohol, cannabis (unless the individual has been authorized to use cannabis for medical purposes) or illegal drugs; - provide others with alcohol, illegal drugs, or cannabis (unless the recipient is an individual who has been authorized to use cannabis for medical purposes); - encourage others to inflict bodily harm on themselves or another person; - engage in hate propaganda in person or electronically or engage in other forms of behaviour motivated by hate or bias; - commit an act of vandalism that causes damage to personal or school property, to property located on the premises of the school, or to the property of others;
